Alice Jackson (1926-2013) was a British painter who spent most of her active painting career living in Somerset, drawing inspiration in large part from the people, countryside and seascape around her.
Born in Bolton in 1926, her early interests in painting were interrupted, like others of her generation, by war.
Having served as a driver in the army at the end of, and for a short while after, the war – seeing service in Egypt amongst other places, Alice returned to civilian life with a job in local government in Morecambe on the Lancashire coast.
After marriage and moves around the country for work, Alice settled as a housewife with a husband and two children in Minehead, Somerset.
Here she found herself with the inspirations of Exmoor national park to one side juxtaposed with the Somerset coast. The landscape gently melting into the sea in certain areas, while crashing into it via craggy rock faces in others.
It was here that her painting talents were allowed to flourish, and she developed her own ‘semi-impressionistic’ style, using it to produce a range of landscape, portrait and still life paintings.
Alice had her paintings included in many exhibitions during her lifetime, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the Armed Forces Exhibition at the Mall Galleries.
